What is chiropractic care?

A way to diagnose certain health problems such as pinched nerves, muscle and bone strains, misalignment, and joint pain. A specialist that diagnoses and treats these health problems is called a chiropractor. The basis of chiropractic care consists of spinal manipulation with alternative medicine being the root of study.

What to expect during your first visit?

Typically a first visit or consultation with a chiropractor will take place for 30-60 minutes. Some basic questions that will be asked will be

  • what are your goals for treatment?
  • Current or past injuries?
  • If you are currently on any medication?
  • What type of lifestyle do you live? Would you consider yourself a active person?
  • Do you have normal or irregular sleeping habits?
  • Are you suffering from mental stress?
  • How many times a week do you exercise?
  • Have past or current use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs?

There may be other physical problems that you may want you to go into detail with. Such as, are there any physical problems that make it hard for you to do certain things? Or if you are suffering from any tingling, numbness, weakness, or any other nerve problems.

After the chiropractor is finished with his or her questionnaire of your health a physical exam will then take place.  Some testing that will take place is checking for spinal mobility, checking blood pressure, and taking x-rays. Treatment will then take place after the examination is finished with the physical examination. You may be asked to lie on a special table where a spinal manipulation will take place. Most common treatments that take place are manipulations by hand, which involves moving a joint followed by a thrusting motion to place the joint back into place. This is what a chiropractor will explain to you as an “adjustment” and will realign bones to make them straight again.

Some interesting facts that you may not know:

How many adjustments should you expect to have?

More often than not you will need more than one session, or adjustment to help treat your current health problem. During the first week of treatment a chiropractor will recommend 2-3 sessions to get the spine, joint, or muscle back into alignment.  Typically these sessions and adjustments will only take 10-20 minutes. Once improvement is being showed your sessions may be cut down to once a week or even once every couple of weeks based on results. Everyone is different and may take longer for some people to improve. Improvement is not solely based off of adjustments, lifestyle, diet, and exercise can all attribute to how well your health is improving.
